Before starting at Masá, I tried everything else out there, but nothing was giving me the drive and motivation to get up and want to go every day. I was really looking for something that would challenge me, push me out of my comfort zone, and also just meet new people (surprise surprise) with a happy, positive environment.
When I first started with the OnRamp sessions, I was terrified. Like anything else that you try for the first time, you have all these mixed emotions. I really doubted myself and thought that I wouldn’t be able to do half of what CrossFit involves. I have to give credit to Coach AJ because before I even finished with the OnRamp, I was ready to leave and never return. He basically said to give it a couple classes because I won’t regret it. Well, he was right. After that I was hooked. I’ll always be thankful for him that he pushed me and didn’t let me give up so easily.
I have never been part of anything where you get the sense of belonging, the social support, and simply just a place to share common interests and goals with others. When you show up for a class, the workout on the board is for everyone who shows up. Yes, you can scale up or down to suit your fitness level, but the workout is the same. It doesn’t matter what you look like, how long you’ve been working out, or how much you can lift. That workout is as much for you as anyone else. You belong because you showed up and that is how Masá has made me feel since day one.
When you complete a workout, you do it alone. But you still have a group of people right there behind you to help you get that last rep or to encourage you to add more weight when you doubt yourself. These people are your team. And as you develop friendships, you’ll find that the support extends beyond the gym. I will be forever grateful for the friendships that I’ve made because they have been there for me during my toughest days and always make it known that they got me no matter what. But most importantly, they accept me for who I am even if that means me being my weird self!
Masá has never just been a gym where I go to workout for an hour and go home. This gym has turned into such a safe place for me that I didn’t even realize I needed. There have been days where I went back and doubled up on a class or I simply go and vent to someone in the corner because I was having a tough day. No questions asked, everyone there has your back. I’ve never felt so strong and passionate about something so when someone asks me where I’ve been working out, I simply say “CrossFit. DO IT! You won’t regret it”. You will find yourself doing things that you didn’t think you could ever do. You will challenge yourself in ways you didn’t think were possible, you will make long lasting friendships and most importantly, you will become a better version of yourself. I know I did.
