I was lucky enough to find Masá after looking for Itamar after moving back to New York. Itamar was coach at CrossFit Stony Brook, then I followed him to DHP, and finally landing here. I gladly drive an extra 20 minutes here to be coached out of bad form, because the coaches here actually pay attention and care enough to say something. I think we all know that Itamar is a special coach and person. He and Taylor have assembled an awesome and life changing team.

I have been thoroughly impressed with the vibe of Masá.  The coaches are ALL outstanding and the athletes are friendly, welcoming, and supportive.  People work hard AND they have fun. There is a warmth and sense of family here that I have not seen in other places. People really care about each other. This is a special place and I am honored to be a part of it.

I was really happy to start moving again after COVID. I took 14 months off, which happened to coincide with a knee surgery, and I literally did nothing. I thought my box jumping and burpee days were over. I’ve been really happy shaking the rust off and moving towards a more comfortable physical place. Picking up weights for the first time and working in a deadlift zone close to where I left off 14 months ago felt really good.

In terms of movements – I’m working on everything. I’m trying to get double unders back and it has been a real test of will, trying to figure out how to fire my lats for pull ups.  Ultimately, I’m working on having fun. Apropos to our name “Masá”-  it’s all about the *journey* and I am trying to enjoy the view while i’m getting my butt kicked.

If I could go back in time, I’d tell myself to challenge myself to keep my world big. My experience as a mental health professional has shown me that we unwittingly create many of the obstacles that we perceive. Our comfort zone shrinks as we age, as we slowly stop doing things that become difficult or unpleasant.  In CrossFit, the act of setting goals and being coached to do more than we think we can do not only helps us from having our world shrink, but it grows our sense of ourselves.  I wish that I had had this understanding and awareness earlier,  but I am more than thankful to engage in this current practice of stretching (with expert guides and gentle fellow travelers) that helps keep my world from shrinking.
