What brought me to Masá? Itamar and Taylor were the best coaches at my first CrossFit box. Both have always been super attentive in their classes, they always corrected my form in ways other coaches missed, and they push us to do more when we can or scale a workout appropriately. As soon as I heard they were opening their own gym, I had to stop by. I planned on going to see Itamar and Taylor, get in a good WOD, and introduce my son to them.
My first impression was that they had become even better coaches, even working with less equipment like they were at the time. I was also impressed by the community they’d built in a short time. When we finished the WOD, Itamar came up to us with his signature “So!” and asked when we wanted to start. Even though we weren’t planning on joining a new CrossFit gym, Masá and the crew there just seemed right.
Since then, some members have left and lots of new ones have joined, the coaching staff has grown, and there’s more equipment. But the core of Masá, the supportive community, the attentive coaching, the community, the quality warmups and attention to mobility, the community… All of that has been consistent. These are my people. We have no family on Long Island, but I’ve found family here. They celebrate my wins both inside and outside the gym, they hug me when I cry, they bring supplies and treats when we’re quarantining, they pick up my kid from school in emergencies, and on my bad days, going to Masá to work out and see my people leaves me feeling better.
I’ve had so many bright spots and I’ve got a terrible memory. My first one? Psshhh, I have no idea. Some of my brightest bright spots though? 50 consecutive double-unders, cleaning a weight in a high-rep WOD that used to be my 1-rep max, working out all the way to the end of my second pregnancy, and OUTWOD.
Right now I’m working on just showing up 4 days a week and not holding anything back in the WODs. I know a lot of people go out too hot and burn out in the first couple rounds, but I have the opposite problem. I usually save something for the end and end up super consistent but knowing I could have done more. So I’m giving it all in the first round and seeing how far it gets me (surprisingly far). I’ll probably use the Open to figure out what else I want to work on this next year.
If I could go back in time, I’d tell myself to do the accessory work before I had babies and they stole all my time. 😂 Also mobility. Honestly, I should probably tell my today self to do more mobility.
