Finding Normal After COVID

About a week ago the CDC updated their COVID-19 guideline: vaccinated individuals no longer need to wear a mask or socially distance in most situations. The underlying message: return to your normal life, as it was before COVID.

For some of us, this was a huge relief. The mask mandate has been lifted!

But for many others, this was an uneasy notion. For over a year we’ve lived with a fear and anxiety of being around other people, especially without masks on. Now, all of a sudden, it’s over. Why? Today feels just like yesterday, which was like last week and like the week before that. How can it suddenly be safe when it feels like nothing has changed?

These feelings are normal, they’re felt by many of your peers. Walking into a packed supermarket or mall is not the most reassuring place to take off your mask for the first time in 14 months.

Eventually, we do need to re-enter a mask-free society. While that may not be today or tomorrow for you, I’m here to tell you why a CrossFit gym may be the best place to start.

Gym’s usually carry a stigma of being sweaty, gross, and unsanitary. To be honest, if it doesn’t feel clean it probably isn’t.

But a CrossFit gym is different.

CrossFit gyms are generally large, open warehouses with most of the equipment tuck away along the walls. There’s lots of free space and adequate airflow (especially if they have garage doors like mine does) so you can keep some distance and trust the air is cleaner.

CrossFit gyms usually operate in class formats, it’s not a free for all. So there’s less people in the facility at a time (we cap it at 12 people per class) and there’s more control over cleanliness. Done correctly, all the equipment used for class is wiped down before it’s put away. With a coach supervising the class, this ensures everything is clean and sanitary for the next class.

With your mind at ease from COVID, you can focus on the most important reason to visit a CrossFit gym: your health.

COVID identified some flaws in our society. One of which is our healthcare system, which is really a sick-care system. Our doctors and hospitals don’t truly focus on our health, they are working with sick individuals. That’s what they’re there for, to save us at our most desperate times. COVID showed us how susceptible many of us are. Individuals with pre-existing conditions (like obesity, heart disease, and hypertension) were at far greater risk when encountering the virus.

CrossFit gyms focus on your health. They create nutrition and fitness plans that are rooted in improving your overall health. Coaches are to doctors as swim instructors are to lifeguards. We’re here to teach you how to swim, so hopefully you’ll never have to be saved from drowning.

So if you’re going to start venturing out of your house and into the world, find a CrossFit gym. Take control of your health and wellness, so you can start living again.
